The 2003 Zhaosu earthquake occurred on December 1, 2003 at 01:38 UTC.[1] The epicenter was located in the Almaty Province, Kazakhstan, near the Kazakhstan-China border.[2] The earthquake had a magnitude of Ms 6.1. The intensity near the epicenter was MSK 7.[3] The epicenter was close to the Zhaosu County, China. In the media of China, 10 people were reported dead, 73 people injured, and more than 800 buildings collapsed. Some people were evacuated in Zhaosu.[4] The earthquake occurred in the cold winter, and the 30 cm ground snow covered the roads in the mountainous region and hindered the relief work.[5]
